Simple Present Tense
Verbs show an action or a state of being. A sentence isn’t complete without a verb. That’s why it is considered to be an important part of every sentence.
The time of the action also plays a major role in determining the tense of the verb. The present tense is used for actions that are happening in the present time or repeatedly. Study the rules of the singular and plural verbs below.
Singular nouns take a singular verb. (Verbs always change.)
He cooks stew.
The snake bites.
She pushes the door.
1. For most verbs, just add -s.
ask – asks
drop – drops
hug -hugs
jump- jumps
2. For verbs ending in ch, sh, s, x or o, add -es.
pass – passes
do – does
mix – mixes
punch – punches
3. For verbs ending in consonant + y, change y to i and add -es.
dry – dries
copy – copies
cry – cries
carry – carries
4. For verbs ending in vowel + y, just add -s.
pray – prays
stay – stays
enjoy – enjoys
play -plays
Plural nouns take a plural verb. (Verbs do not change.)
pack – pack
shake – shake
go – go
brush – brush
climb – climb
forget – forget
tell – tell
destroy – destroy
You go to France.
The kids play together.
I study at night.
