câu There's no pain without gain còn 1 'biến thể' khác (được used nhiều hơn thì fải) là no pain no gain.

danceswithwolves
28-08-2003, 23:22
there's no pain without gain ? i think "there's no gain without pain" is more appropriate :). just my 0.02$.

and, yes, "no pain no gain" is used very popularly instead of its full-form (is it?).

forgive my bad english.

Condauaotim
29-08-2003, 15:36
hìhì, yeah, that's it. There's no gain without pain, i misstyped.
Hey, how do you translate this :
Everyone's business is no one's business.

danceswithwolves
29-08-2003, 21:01
everyone's business is noone's business --> cha chung ko ai khóc .

danceswithwolves
29-08-2003, 21:03
yah, i have one proverb. can u translate it ?

when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Condauaotim
29-08-2003, 22:35
Cái đó hả? Là " Nhập gia tuỳ tục" phải không? How about this :" what must be must be"?

danceswithwolves
30-08-2003, 00:18
what must be must be --> cái gì đến sẽ phải đến .

what do u think 'bout this : an apple a day, keep the doctor away ?

always
30-08-2003, 07:59
first time see it. Let me guess... "phòng bệnh hơn chữa bệnh".

i'm not sure. How about "there is always a silver lining behind each cloud" ?

// thanks for condauaotim's correction

Condauaotim
31-08-2003, 13:27
Does it mean that :"Trong cái rủi cũng có cái may"? I'm not sure...But I think that it must be " there is always a silver lining behind each cloud" to have that meaning.
How do you translate this? " Misfortunes never come alone".

always
31-08-2003, 14:40
I'm so wrong and you're so right. I have to reformat /q my head :). Does the given proverb mean "Họa vô đơn chí" ? just a guess.

for "lightning", it should be "lightning never strikes in the same place twice". How will you translate it ? Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

danceswithwolves
31-08-2003, 15:07
lightning never strikes in the same place twice --> ko ai giàu 3 họ, ko ai khó 3 đời (i think it's not right :) )

birds of a feather, flock together = ?

Condauaotim
31-08-2003, 21:49
Hi`hi`... "love in a cottage", "một túp lều tranh hai trái tim vàng" à? I'm even not sure. What do you think about this : "handsome is as handsome does"?

danceswithwolves
31-08-2003, 23:16
handsome is as handsome does = đẹp nết hơn đẹp người/tốt gỗ hơn tốt nước sơn (is it right :D ?)

better late than never (hehe, it's just a piece of cake ) = ?

always
31-08-2003, 23:30
where's the piece of cake ? I'm a little bit hungry now. "Trễ còn hơn không" ? yes, not a good translation, but I have some limits...

Off-the-topic : how should the catch-phrase "đừng chết vì thiếu hiểu biết" be translated into English ?

And to let the stream flow, how do you think about "let sleeping dogs lie" (another piece of cake) ?

The last piece of cake - "stolen kisses are sweet". Enjoy the cake, friends.

danceswithwolves
31-08-2003, 23:38
đừng chết vì thiếu hiểu biết = don't die of ignorance

let sleeping dogs lie = đừng nhiều chuyện (hehe, i don't know :D )

stolen kisses are sweet = những nụ hôn trộm thì ngọt ngào (my God, I don't know what I'm writing :emlaugh: )

forbidden fruit is sweetest. Is it the same ??

how 'bout this : Rome wasn't built in a day .

always
01-09-2003, 07:35
"đừng nhiều chuyện" ? lol :D. Very imaginative.

"những nụ hôn trộm thì ngọt ngào" - is it some kindda word-by-word translation ? :). Anyway, I guess [stolen kisses are sweet] has the same meaning as [forbidden fruit is sweetest].

[Rome wasn't built in a day] = "Đại nghiệp bất khả tốc thành". I'm not very satisfied with my answer. Is there any better translation ?

here are proverbs for the day :

[the child is father of the man]
[burnt child dreads the fire] (kindda easy)

danceswithwolves
01-09-2003, 08:57

01-09-2003, 12:54
_ Grass is always greener at the other side of the hill = đứng núi này, trông núi nọ.

_ love me little... --> i potay 2 --> need always' help

_ the next is : An eye for an eye :D

always
01-09-2003, 13:55
[an eye for an eye] = sát nhân đền mạng. Don't be so serious :D, it should be "ăn miếng trả miếng".

thanks to my love, I have an answer for [love me little, love me long] :

anh ơi, don't quá vội
love me từ tốn thôi
when we biết tiết kiệm (potay. dont know how)
our love lasts trọn đời

hì, what's next ? [when the cat's away, the mice will play].

[take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves] - i dont quite understand this proverb clearly, but IMO, it may have the same meaning as [a penny saved is penny gained]. DWW, finish me if i'm wrong. Again, thank God we're playing an English game. Cannot imagine how I will be when it comes to Français.

[kill the goose that lays the golden eggs] = tham lợi nhãn tiền, bất tri hậu vận

_ I have the answer for u

+ proverb : An old and common saying;
expresses some practical truth, or the result of experience and observation;

ex: an empty vessel gives a greater sound than a full barrel

+ idiom : The syntactical or structural form peculiar to any language; the genius or cast of a language.

ex: sell someone down the river

u c, very clear definitions --> why do u tell that we can't distinguish idioms and proverbs ?
if we have any mistake, it's because we'r trying to find corresponding Vietnamese proverbs to explain english proverbs or idioms.

here, just a play-ground, play in peace.

PS : don't keep ur mind on my terrible English lol

No, I have never been some kindda wonderer :D . I'm not that good. And I'm sure that we can't distingguish anything, but we can distinguish idioms from proverbs :whistling . Yes, there're many times I'm wrong, but idioms are not proverbs, FYI.

and, please simply show idioms that I posted, I'll correct my mistakes. There are several idioms were posted in this thread, but seperately, not in a series (take a look at what you've posted); therefore they can be... tolerated

wow, đọc 1 lượt hết 12 trang nhức đầu luôn, anyway, Mr/Ms "always" did use idiom when posting "let's sleep dog like," and sometimes it's hard to tell whether it is a proverb or an idiom like "every dog has his day," to mulan, that particular saying can be counted for both.
Well ... let's try "you eat your own dog food" another pumpkin, thought.

Cheer,
Mulan

Tớ góp vài thanh ngữ nhé.

Beauty is only skin deep
Proverbial meaning: Physical beauty is only just one of many personal qualities and, is not considered by most cultures to be the most important attribute. Other qualities, such as intellect, kindness, and emotional maturity may be more prized.
Example:
Tom: Why have you decided to get married to Jane so suddenly?
Bill: Well, she is so pretty and lovely, and she looks like an angel.
Tom: Well, Bill, I hope that ‘Beauty’s Only Skin Deep,” and that there are other important characteristics to consider if you’re going to be married.
Bill: You know, I think you’re right. I shouldn’t be so obsessed with Jane’s outer appearance.

góp thêm cái nữa nè.

April Showers Bring May Flowers
Proverbial meaning: Some unpleasant occurrences bring about better things.
Example:
Ann: I’m unhappy because I lost my job.
Marry: Well, you didn’t really like that job, anyway, and with your talents you’re sure to find a better job. April showers bring May flowers.
