Captain Comeback does it again: Le loses his first fight
By Steve Cofield
There's no way Scott Smith could top his comeback performances against Benji Radach and Pete Sell. Don't ever count out "Hands of Steel" because he's turning out to be the most dramatic fighter in the sport. For two and a half rounds, Cung Le landed every kick he tried and bounced Smith around the cage. He floored Smith three different times on body kicks. Smith showed incredible toughness and when Le got tired later in the fight, he took advantage of his opening. In the third, Smith faked a right and changed the fight with a left hook that buckled Le. Le trying to hold on, lerched forward and got caught with another right down the pipe. Le fell to his knees and then his back on the ground, he took two more shots before McCarthy stopped it at 3;25 of the third.
A Smith win was unimagineable just two minutes into the fight when Le dropped him and got off 50-plus unanswered punches on the ground. In one stretch, Le got off 38 shots and yet referee John McCarthy didn't freak out and stop it. The bevy of hammerfists seemed to tire Le, who breathed deeply through his mouth for the rest of the fight. His hands gradually dropped leaving the door open for Smith in the third.
It was the first career loss for Le, 37. Smith is now 17-6 and rebounded from an awful beating at the hands of Nick Diaz in August.

Turning side kicks are vicious. Especially when Cung Le throws them. It doesn't matter. A major upset by Smith ended hopes for Strikeforce's plans.
There isn't a whole lot to tell that you couldn't figure out about round one. Early into the first round Le lands a nice turning side kick to Smith's body, dropping him quickly to the canvas. From there Le poured on the offense until Smith miraculously made it back to the canvas. It didn't matter much. Le landed another turning side kick in addition to a variety of other punches to serious effect. Smith managed to survive but was no offensive threat.
Round two wasn't much different. Another turning side kick dropped Smith early. Le wasn't able to do much from Smith's guard and from there Smith tried a few takedowns without much effect. One nice uppercut from Smith lands, but still not enough to undo the knockdown.
Badri Hari isn't the only one throwing spinning heel kicks. To open round three, Le threw a nice spinning heel kick in addition to a bevy of turning side kicks. Smith tried to rebound and Cung Le admittedly looked gassed in the early parts of the round even if a spinning back first landed as well as a knockdown.
Then it happened.
3:25 of round three. As Smith closed the pocket and Le ducked what he thought was a short right coming, he dropped a short life dropped Le clean. From there Smith followed up with punches until referee Big John McCarthy had no choice to stop it.

In a dramatic come-from-behind victory, Scott Smith spent two rounds getting kicked around by Cung Le Saturday night -- and then pummeled Le with hard punches and finished Le in the third.
Smith's third-round TKO victory was a sensational performance in the main event of Strikeforce Evolution, and the most impressive win of Smith's MMA career.
It was also the first loss for Le, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion who now focuses more on acting than fighting. Given Le's age (37), his interest in exploring other career opportunities and the way he wilted when Smith hit him hard, it has to be asked whether this was Le's last fight.
In the first and second rounds Le repeatedly knocked Smith down with spinning back kicks, showing off the exciting, cinematic style that makes many fans view Le as one of the sport's most exciting fighters. Smith looked like he had no answer for Le's unique stand-up style, and with the way Le was dominating the early action, it was surprising that Smith even made it out of the first round.
But in the third round Smith shocked Le with a hard left hand that knocked him down, and then knocked Le down again with another hard punch. And then Smith smelled blood and pounced, jumping on top of Le and forcing referee Big John McCarthy to stop the fight.
"That was so much fun," Smith said. "I've got a hard head. He beat on me for a good two and a half rounds."
Le showed a lot of class in the cage after the fight, crediting Smith for the win and insisting that his acting career hadn't in any way distracted him.
"He caught me with a punch," Le said. "He was the better man tonight. I did my best and he caught me."
Smith isn't a great mixed martial artist, but he has had an MMA career full of exciting highlights, and this win, which improves his record to 17-6, is just the latest. Le, who drops to 6-1 with his first loss, learned the hard way that Smith doesn't go down easily.
