Thằng ku Brent Askwith sau khi xịt thuốc chết con nhện bự tổ chảng này thì thấy con ký sinh trùng Mermithid Nematode (thuộc dòng họ nhà sán lãi, chuyên sống nhờ cơ thể của các loại côn trùng) bò ra từ bên trong:

When YouTube user Brent Askwith saw a freakishly large worm slither out of a spider he had just killed, he recorded the ghoulish event and appropriately named the video "WTF IS THIS?!?"

"I was just editing my latest montage and this huge spider came out, so I sprayed it and killed it, then this fricken alien worm came out," Askwith wrote in the video's description.

That "alien worm" is actually a parasitic nematode, also known as a roundworm. While the nematode in the YouTube video is larger than most, Harvard University entomologist Dr. Brian Farrell told The Huffington Post that every human is infested with thousands of tiny nematodes.

"Most have no obvious effect on us, and we are mostly unaware of their presence," he wrote in an e-mail, "but a few are large enough to cause diseases such as trichinosis."

In addition to looking strange, nematode parasites can cause their hosts to do strange things. Dr. Farrell gave the example of some nematodes that prey on ants -- the parasite makes its host climb a tree and wave its butt in the air in order to catch the eye of a bird. The bird then nabs the ant, allowing the parasite to escape through the ant's abdomen and spread to other potential hosts.

"My personal favorite is Toxoplasma gondii," Dr. Farrell wrote, "the protozoan that infects cats (and is the reason pregnant women should not be around cats). Toxoplasma also infects rats and makes them unafraid of cats, so they get eaten and the parasites are able to then infect the cats they desire. Weird."

Thật ra con nhện này cũng gần đến giờ chầu diêm vương rồi.

Loại ký sinh trùng này khi đã quá lớn (chiếm hết toàn bộ chỗ trong hệ thống tiêu hóa của con vật mà nó ở nhờ) và muốn thoát ra ngoài để sinh sản thì nó sẽ làm con nhện cảm thấy cực kỳ khát nước, con nhện sẽ lò mò đi kiếm chỗ ẩm ướt, và khi đến nơi nào đủ ẩm thì con ký sinh trùng kia sẽ phá banh xác nó để chui ra.

Ngày xưa người ta thường thắc mắc tại sao bên cạnh tách trà nguội lạnh để qua đêm chưa dọn lại có xác nhện nằm te tua, và trong tách thì có "con giun", sau này khoa học đã phân loại hẳn hoi thì mới nhiều người biết đến.

The Worm, the Spider and the Coffee Cup

How would you explain the presence of a long writhing worm found in the cold remains of last night's cup of coffee? Something you narrowly missed drinking perhaps? But then you notice a large dead huntsman spider on the bench near the coffee cup... hmmm.

Poor old spiders! Their lives are full of tribulations, and some of the worst involve insidious attacks by a variety of lethal parasitic organisms. The worm in the coffee cup, probably a mermithid nematode, is one of these. Mermithid worms are internal parasites whose infective larvae enter spiders directly or via ingested food. Once inside the spider, the tiny worm obtains nourishment from it's hosts body fluids, digestive glands, gonads ('parasitic castration') and muscles. As a consequence the spider becomes progressively more debilitated, but doesn't actually die. This is because the spider's vital organs usually remain intact, even though all of the abdomen, and occasionally part of the cephalothorax, may be filled with worm coils. Eventually in a scene reminiscent of the movie "Alien", the gorged worm bursts out of the body of the debilitated spider, which finally dies after this macabre event.

Before it dies, however the spider often has to perform one more task for it's deadly parasite. In some mermithids, the final free-living stage of the worm is aquatic, so that it is advantageous for the worm if its emergence can take place near a water body - a pond, a creek or puddle. To increase this likelihood, such worms seem able to induce their hapless hosts to seek water, spiders sometimes actually walking into the water before the worm emerges. This behavior may result from thirst-induced activity as the worm consumes the spider's body fluids. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that the spider's water seeking behavior helps to ensure the parasite's survival and propagation.

So what happened in the kitchen during the night? Perhaps the thirsty huntsman spider was carrying a water-dependant parasite and could find only one 'water body' in the kitchen - a cold cup of coffee left on a bench. The weakened spider climbed up the side of the cup and fell in. The tightly coiled worm then emerged from the spider's body into the liquid. The dying spider may then have managed to crawl out of the cup, only to succumb on the kitchen bench. - Mike Gray, Australian Museum

Loại Mermithid Nematode thì chỉ sống trong bụng các loại côn trùng thôi, còn loại Ascaris lumbricoides ở nhờ trong cơ thể con người thì màu trắng nhẽo trắng nhợt. Hồi còn trong trường làng thì tớ từng chứng kiến một thằng cùng lớp mửa ra một con dài như chiếc đũa.
